What to wear to a photoshoot?

You just booked in a photoshoot, yay, but you start stressing over what to wear. You’re not alone. What you decide to wear will immensely change the look and feel of the shoot. I’m going to give you my tips to help you style your outfits for the photoshoot.

  • The first step is to decide on a colour palette. Pick a palette with 2-3 colours. For example, Earthy tones, Neutral tones, Blues, Pastels etc. My favourite by far is earthy and neutral tones. I find they compliment every skin tone and work with all different environments that you will be shooting at. I always suggest avoiding the colour white. Even though it is such a gorgeous and crisp colour (my favourite to wear), it is too bright for photos and tends to draw attention away from faces. After all we want the attention to go directly to your face and emotions instead of to the white pieces of clothing you’re wearing. An off white/ivory works great instead of the bright crisp white.

  • Whilst choosing the outfits, try to coordinate with each other instead of matching. Choose a few different colours within the same colour palette for each family member. Layering clothing can be a great way to tie the colours together. This is where it’s good to think about different textures. I love linen and natural fabrics that tend to flow freely on the body.

  • Keep it simple, plain pieces of clothing work best, avoid any logos or branded clothing as these can be a huge distraction. Large prints or patterns are also advised against. A floral dress can work beautifully. In this instance, you would use the colours of the floral dress to source plain pieces for the other family members in those colours. That will help tie the colours together and coordinate beautifully.

  • My photos are very playful, so I suggest keeping comfort in mind. I love wearing tight fitted dresses but when it comes to photos they don’t work well. Tight, short dresses limit how you can move comfortably. Outfits that show movement work much better. For example a long flowy dress that catches the wind when you walk/run or twirl around looks ever so gorgeous in the photos. A large oversized jacket is perfect for cuddling or to wrap it around you. These also help with posing and using your arms/hands to create movement.

  • Now lets talk shoes. Depending on location, barefoot is always best. If it’s not possible due to location, or if family members just aren’t comfortable, then try to go with something very simple. Nice tan/brown shoes work well. Of course this also depends on the outfit you are wearing. Shoes tend to show a lot of dirt on them so try to make sure they are as clean/new as possible. Remember the photos will be treasured forever.

  • Our over all appearance; you want to be as natural and comfortable as possible. Don’t go over doing it with makeup, some think more is best when it comes to photos. In saying that, apply as much makeup as you would like, but be mindful not to apply so many layers. Those layers will show in photos especially the close ups.

  • As with the hair, letting it fall free is usually the best look at shoots. This also adds another layer of movement to the photos. A small clip or headband can be used to keep hair off the kids faces if you wish.
